HP now offers industry-standard Token Ring connectivity for HP 3000
systems. The availability of the Token Ring product enables the HP
3000 to be easily integrated into installed Token Ring networks.
Customers can now connect a HP 3000 system into any industry-standard
Token Ring or 802.3/Ethernet network. Since the HP 3000 system supports
both local-area networking protocols, the customer has the flexibility
to select a LAN protocol that best meets their business needs without
having to rewire or purchase additional equipment.
Product Overview
================
The Token Ring 3000/iX Network Link product provides a native Token
Ring connection for HP 3000 Series 900 HP-Precision Bus (HP-PB) systems
(9X7LX, 9X7, 920-958 and the high-end platform systems to be introduced
in May). The Token Ring adapter is a single-high HP-PB card that
supports either 4Mbps or 16Mbps link speeds over Shielded Twisted Pair
and 4Mps over Unshielded Twisted Pair cabling. The Token Ring product
provides connectivity using either the TCP/IP transport or Novell
Netware's IPX transport. The product also supports networking
applications developed using NetIPC or Berkeley Sockets. The supported
networking services include; Novell Netware, LAN Manager, FTP, NFS, and
Network Services. Future releases will include support for SNA.
Benefits
========
By adhering to IBM's industry-standard Token Ring networking protocol,
the customer can directly connect a HP 3000 system into an existing
Token Ring network. This plug-and-play capability not only helps make
the product easy to install, but also protects the customer's existing
networking investment. Additionally, providing a native Token Ring
solution can translate into cost savings for customers who are no
longer required to purchase a bridge or router to connect a HP 3000
system to a Token Ring network. Since the Token Ring adapter card
supports 4Mbps or 16Mbps link speeds, customers can have an easy and
cost effective migration path as their bandwidth requirements grow.
Target Market
=============
Token Ring 3000/iX Network Link is intended for customers with
installed Token Ring networks who want the capability to directly
connect a high-performance HP 3000 system to their network. The
availability of the Token Ring product will enable the HP 3000 to
further penetrate IBM environments and PC networks, where Token Ring is
the predominant LAN protocol used. Examples of computing environments
where the availability of Token Ring can assist you in closing a deal
include; cost-conscious customers who want to off-load applications or
replace their existing IBM mainframe with a HP 3000 system as well as
customers wanting to benefit from the high-performance of the HP 3000
as a Server on their PC network.
Competition
===========
DEC recently announced support of Token Ring for VAX systems. DEC's
Token Ring offering is only supported on Low-end VAX systems and is
over-priced. In general, DEC has made a weak commitment towards
supporting the Token Ring protocol.
However, IBM views Token Ring as its strategic LAN connection. It
offers Token Ring on all of its strategic platforms (eg., ES/9000,
AS/400, and RS/6000).
Availability and Ordering Information
=====================================
The Token Ring 3000/iX Network Link product will be on the May CPL and
available for shipment in June (MPE/iX release 4.0). The Token Ring
3000/iX Network Link product will also be included with the HP 3000
Series 900 Structured Solution Bundles.
The product will consist of the Token Ring HP-PB adapter card, Token
Ring driver, TCP/IP transport, and hardware and software manuals. SNMP
(Simple Network Management Protocol) Agent and Basic/Incoming VT
(Virtual Terminal) services will also be included with this product.
When ordering, you must order the base product (J2167A), hardware
option AL4 and the appropriate processor option (Option 3XX). MPE/iX
release 4.0 or a later release is required for the product to be
operational.
